October 2025: Empower Your Health

Jimi Psarakis, Development Director at Bacoa

A NOTE FROM BACOA’S DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

As we welcome October, I’m reminded of how much strength and peace of mind come from understanding the information that shapes our daily lives. This month is recognized nationally as Health Literacy Month — a reminder that good health isn’t just about access to doctors or medications, but also about being able to understand and use health information with confidence.

At Bacoa, we see every day how complex systems — whether it’s Medicare, prescription drug plans, or caregiving resources — can feel overwhelming. That’s why our programs are designed not only to provide services, but also to guide, explain, and empower. Whether it’s helping someone navigate Medicare Part D, offering caregiver support, or simply answering a question with patience, our goal is to ensure that older adults and families never feel lost or alone in making important decisions.

This October, I encourage you to lean on Bacoa as your partner in clarity. Together, we can transform information into confidence — and confidence into healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Warmly,

Jimi Psarakis
Director of Development, Bacoa

Bacoa recommends that you review your Medicare prescription drug plan annually because plans make changes to benefits and costs, as well as offer new plans. With these different changes, your current plan might not be the best fit for you in 2026.

Bacoa’s Youth Leadership Board

Members of Bacoa’s YouthLeadership Board had an amazing time connecting and getting creative at BarringtonHorizons. The afternoon was full of laughter, new friendships, and shared stories, as members and guests alike showed off their painting talents. It was also a wonderful learning experience, giving our youth the opportunity to see how a board functions while building leadership skills.

The impact was felt by all who participated. As one guest shared, “Such a nice group of kids! Thanks for coming out and playing with us!”

Moments like these are what make our Youth Leadership Board so special!

Cuisine Club: A Monthly Dining Adventure

Our latest Cuisine Club outing took us to Ciao Baby! in inBarrington, where laughter, connection, and of course—delicious food—were on the menu. More than just a monthly lunch, Bacoa’s Cuisine Club is a celebration of community and friendship.

Moments like these remind us why this group is so special: it’s not just a meal—it’s an opportunity to stay social, meet new friends, and create lasting memories together.

A heartfelt thank you to the team at Ciao Baby! for their warm hospitality and helping us make another wonderful memory.

Bacoa’s Day Out is a social program designed to support individuals living with early-stageAlzheimer’s Disease and related dementias. It provides a structured, engaging, and strength-based environment that encourages connection, creativity, and exploration.

Last month, our Day Out participants visited the Enabling Garden at the Chicago Botanic Garden. They explored sensory plants, created their own herbal dish gardens, and enjoyed a leisurely walk among the garden’s beautiful seasonal plantings. It was a wonderful opportunity for learning, engagement, and shared experiences.
