August 2025: Healing Through Music, Volunteer Thanks & More

A NOTE FROM BACOA’S DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
This summer has been filled with moments that remind me why I’m so proud to be part of the Bacoa team. Whether it’s the quiet impact of a volunteer delivering a meal or the laughter shared during a group outing, these small, powerful interactions are at the heart of everything we do.
In my role as Development Director, I’ve been focused on listening—hearing the stories of those we serve, learning from our supporters, and understanding the deep roots Bacoa has in this community. It’s clear that this isn’t just an organization—it’s a network of care, connection, and purpose.
As we look ahead, I’m excited to keep building on that foundation—creating new partnerships, strengthening support, and ensuring Bacoa continues to be a place where older adults, families, and caregivers feel seen, supported, and valued.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us.

New Pilot Program Brings the Power of Music to “A Day Out”

We’re thrilled to introduce a new pilot program in our A Day Out Adult Day Program that taps into the incredible connection between music and memory. Thanks to the generosity of Kelly Willenborg, Brain Health Gerontologist and Music Interventionist, Bacoa has joined the Healing Headset Project, a national initiative that gifts wireless, Bluetooth-enabled music players to memory cafés and respite programs.
Each of our day program participants, with the help of their care partner, completed a music survey of their favorite genres, songs, and artists. From there, we created personalized playlists tailored to evoke joyful, meaningful memories, then loaded them onto individual headsets.
The result? Smiles, toe-tapping, and even a few happy tears as music sparked moments of recognition, connection, and comfort.
This pilot reflects Bacoa’s continued commitment to innovative, person-centered support for those living with early-stage Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias. We’re proud to bring programs like this to our A Day Out community, where movement, mindfulness, creativity, and connection come together in a safe, supportive environment.
Programs like these are possible because of you—our donors, volunteers, team members, and the incredible Bacoa community who make our mission more than words. Thank you for helping us turn care into action. Openings are currently available in the A Day Out Adult Day Program.

Welcome to Bacoa!
Please join us in welcoming Amy Seul, who joined Bacoa on July 21st as our new Social Services Manager!
Amy brings nearly 30 years of experience in the field of social services, with a strong background in long-term care, township senior services, home care, and independent retirement communities. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with an emphasis in Health & Aging, and a Minor in Business Administration.
Amy is no stranger to Bacoa, she’s familiar with our work through her previous support of caregivers of older adults with dementia, particularly in the Bartlett area. She’s excited to now be serving the Barrington area and looks forward to connecting with residents and becoming a part of the Bacoa community.
Outside of work, Amy enjoys traveling (she’s been to Mexico, Canada, Spain, France, Ireland, and Greece!), going to 80’s concerts, home decorating, and spending time with family. A creative at heart, she’s a big fan of paint-and-sip classes, and believes you’re never too old to learn something new!
We’re thrilled to have Amy on board and know she’ll make a wonderful addition to the team.

The Heartbeat of Everyday Help
We’re grateful for your incredible consistency and commitment, and we want to take a moment to say thank you. Whether you show up quietly, without fanfare or expectation of recognition, your presence makes a meaningful difference every day.
Whether a dedicated helper assisting with our support groups, or someone who quietly ensures supplies are ready before every program—your reliability and heart make a daily difference.
You don’t always see their names in headlines, but their impact is felt in every warm greeting, every smooth-running activity, and every moment of comfort provided.
To every volunteer who’s made Bacoa part of their routine, we see you, we appreciate you, and we’re so grateful you’ve chosen to walk alongside us in this work.
At Bacoa, volunteers aren’t just a support system—they’re part of the family.
When young volunteers engage with older adults, they’re not just making a difference today—they’re laying the foundation for a more thoughtful and inclusive future. They’re learning what it means to show up, to listen, and to lead with kindness.
At Bacoa, we know that community is built across generations—and some of the most meaningful connections happen when young people and older adults come together.
Volunteering isn’t just about what you give—it’s about what you gain.
This summer, we’ve seen teens and young adults step into volunteer roles with heart, humor, and humility. Whether helping out with activities, chatting during lunch, or lending a hand wherever needed, they’re not just giving their time—they’re gaining something powerful in return: perspective, empathy, and real-life lessons that can’t be taught in a classroom.
Know a student or young adult who might be looking for a way to give back?
Encourage them to reach out. Bacoa always welcomes volunteers of all ages who are ready to connect, contribute, and grow alongside our community.

Cuisine Club: Good Food, Great Company!

More than just a monthly lunch, Bacoa’s Cuisine Club is a celebration of connection, laughter, and community. Our recent outing to Shakou in Barrington was filled with warm smiles, shared stories, and of course—delicious food. Moments like these remind us why this group is so important. For many, it’s not just a meal—it’s a chance to stay social, build new friendships, and enjoy something special together.
A heartfelt thank you to the team at Shakou for their wonderful hospitality and helping us make another beautiful memory.

Golden Hour on the Water: An Evening at Lake Barrington!
Our group traded daytime sunshine for golden hour serenity with a beautiful evening boat ride on Lake Barrington. As the sun dipped below the trees and the water shimmered in the fading light, we shared stories, laughter, and quiet moments of connection.
There’s something special about being on the water at dusk, calm, reflective, and full of gratitude. We’re so thankful to everyone who made the evening possible and joined us for this peaceful summer escape. These outings continue to show how powerful simple joy and community can be.
